Rivera appeared in commercials for Kmart as a baby, but her first significant acting job was at age 4 when she appeared as Hillary Winston in The royal Family sitcom in 1991. In 2009, Rivera was cast as Santana Lopez, a high school cheerleader, on Fox’s musical comedy series Glee, about a high school glee club. Rivera’s character comes off as a cold-hearted and vicious cheerleader, who often shows her softer side to fellow cheerleader Brittany. Rivera auditioned for the opportunity “to sing, dance and act all in the same show,” and because she was a fan of co-composer  Ryan Murphy’s previous work on Nip/Tuck Rivera drew on her own high school experience of unpopularity to prepare for the role, as well as watching films such as Mean Girls to “really get in the zone and feel like a bitchy sophomore.” She described Santana as “your typical high school cheerleader, for the most part,” explaining: “She’s really mean and loves boys. In July 2011, Rivera was nominated for two ALMA Awards, in the categories of Favorite Female Music Artist and Favorite TV Actress – Leading Role in a Comedy.  Rivera received a great amount of critical praise for both her acting and her singing performances in the latter part of season two and the beginning of season three. The film carries on with to play at festivals, receiving mixed reviews. Rivera’s acting, however, received praise. Edgar Chaput, of Sound on Sight, called Rivera “the standout… the most natural performance in the film,” while Marsha McCreadie, of Film Journal, wrote, “At the Devil’s Door doesn’t pick up steam until late in the story when Rivera carries the narrative,” and Jeremy Kibler of Diabolique magazine wrote, “Coming primarily from a TV background and fun to watch as sharp-tongued lesbian cheerleader Santana on Glee, the eye-grabbing Naya Rivera adjusts to the big screen with ease in front of the camera. Her Vera is headstrong and rigid but cut with just the right amount of vulnerability.”

In 2015, Rivera portrayed the periodical role of Blanca Alvarez in the third season of the duration of life drama series Devious Maids. She wrote a memoir titled Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up in September 2016. Glee star Naya Rivera went missing while boating and swimming with her son on Lake Piru, and the search continues for the star who is presumed dead. Her four-year-old son, Josey, was found sleeping alone on the rented boat after his mother didn’t return it. Ventura County Sheriff officer Chris Dyer said at a press conference: ‘I think a tragic accident happened here and it breaks my heart.’ While the search for her goes on, this isn’t the only terrible event to have taken place in the lake’s treacherous waters… ADVERTISEMENT Top articles by Metro Brooklyn Beckham’s love life as he proposes to Nicola Peltz: Chloe Grace Moretz to Hana Cross READ MORE SKIP AD The dark history of Lake Piru, located in a reservoir in southern California, has been the site of several deaths over the years. These tragedies have often been blamed on things like low visibility, debris, winds strong enough to tip boats over, whirlpools, and cold temperatures in the water. Sheriff Dyer has cited ‘dangerous conditions’ as the reason why authorities had to pause the search for Naya on Wednesday night. He said: ‘We’re talking during the day 8 to 10 inches of visibility in the lake, lots of debris, full-sized trees and debris under the water and varying depths.’ Naya Rivera underwater footage released The LA Times reported in 2000 that there had been seven deaths in the lake since 1994. Lake Piru’s parks and recreation services manager at the time, Douglas West, told the publication that there had been approximately a dozen deaths there during his then-23 years working there and that most of those who died were not experienced swimmers, were without life jackets and had sadly overestimated their skills in the water or swam in prohibited areas.
