Biography of Rahat Indori:

Rahat Indori (1 January 1950- 11 August 2020), was a well known Urdu language poet and an Indian Bollywood lyrics writer. He was a painter and also a former professor of Urdu language. Prior to this, he was a pedagogies of Urdu literature. He has written many popular songs in Bollywood. He earlier tested coronavirus positive. This celebrated poet passed away on 11 August 2020 after suffering cardiac arrest.

Early life and education:

Rahat Indori Ji was born on 1 January 1950 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. His father’s name was Rafatullah Qureshi, a cloth mill worker and mother  Maqbool Un Nisa Begum, a housewife. He was their fourth child. He completed his Intermediate from Nutan School Indore. After this in the year of 1973, he completed his undergraduate course from Islamia Karimia College Indore and also completed his master’s degree in Urdu literature from Barkatullah University, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) in 1975  and passed out with a gold medal.    He was awarded a Doctorate in Urdu literature from Bhoj University, Madhya Pradesh in the year of 1985, for his thesis ‘Urdu Main Mushaira. He was a brilliant student both in study and sports during his school and college days and also the captain of the football and hockey team at school and college level.  When he was 19, he recited his first sher in his college. He was a very good painter and has also done a job as a successful painter. He painted several Bollywood posters and banners.


He had to face many problems to set up his life due to financial issues in his family. At the age of fewer than 10 years, he started working as a signboard painter. Very soon he became the best painter in Indore. There was a time when his customers had to wait for a long time to get the boards painted by him. He started teaching Urdu literature at Indore University and he was the best lecturer in the University. From the last 45 years, Rahat Indori was actively performing in  Mushairas and started receiving invitations from all over the world. He was not only a celebrated poet in this country but was also a recognized Urdu poet internationally for his ability, hard work, and a characteristic style of delivering Ashaar. He has attended many Kavi Sammelans in the USA, UK, UAE, Canada, Singapore, Mauritius, KSA, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, etc. He has received a number of national and international awards for Urdu Sher-o-Shayari. He was also a popular lyrics writer in the Bollywood film industry. Some of his lyrics used in Bollywood movies such as Munna Bhai MBBS, Kareeb, Minakshee, Ghatak, Khudar Murder, etc. In addition, his short liner Bulati Hai Magar Jane Ka Nahi became very famous on social media. He was invited to The Kapil Sharma Show twice as a guest. He was also invited to the show Wah! Wah! Kya Baat Hai! On SAB TV.

Personal Life:

In the year 1986, Rahat Indori married Seema Rahat. The couple was blessed with 2 sons Faisal Rahat and Satlaj Raha and daughter Shibli Irfan. After a few years, he married Urdu and Hindi language poet Anjum Rehbar and the couple separated in the year 1993.

 Death and Cause:

This legendary personality died at the age of 70, due to a heart attack at a hospital in Indore on Tuesday. He also had a 60% pneumonia. He had been admitted to hospital on Tuesday morning after he tested positive for the COVID-19. Before his death, he wrote on his official social media that, “After showing initial Covid-19 symptoms, I was tested for the virus on Monday and I am declared positive for the virus today and have been admitted to Aurobindo hospital.”

After the sudden death of the poet, many popular celebrities and politicians shared emotional messages on social media.
