Vikas Dubey is a gangster turned into a politician, based in Kanpur dehat district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The first criminal case against him was registered in the early 1990s, and by 2020 he had over 60 offender cases against his name. As of July 2020, he is connected to the killing of a Minister of state, inside a police station, and in another incident is the main accused in the killing of eight policemen during an attempted arrest. UP Police declared him an absconder with a bounty of ₹5 lakh before he was finally arrested on July 9 2020 near Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple in Ujjain. Media reports state that because of his political connections, Vikas Dubey has been acquitted for most of his murders, despite the presence of multiple witnesses at the scenes.

Early life

Vikas Dubey is a resident of a village Bikaru, Chaubepur block, Uttar Pradesh. He was born in 26th December 1964, In his youth, he formed his own gang. Dubey reportedly committed his first crime at the age of 17. He was responsible for numerous criminal activities, including murder and land grabbing. The first case against him was lodged in 1990 for murder and by 2020 he had over 60 criminal cases against his name involving murder extortion and land grabbing.

 In no time he became one of the most wanted criminals in Kanpur. He is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party  (BJP) politician Harikishan Srivastava, who was in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Dubey, too, joined the BSP in 1995-96 and won elections at the district level, by allegedly employing force. His wife, Richa Dubey, has also won elections of local bodies. Dubey is the primary accused in the 2001 killing of BJP leader Santosh Shukla, who was then a Minister of State, in the Shivli police station. Dubey has been previously arrested but has later been acquitted due to alleged political pressure. Dubey is known to go by the name Vikas Pandit, naming himself after the titular character of the 1999 film Arjun Pandit. He is known to be alternatively referred to by this name, or simply as Pandit.

Vikas Dubey belongs to a Hindu family in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. In his family, he has his parents, wife, brother, sister-in-law, along with his two children.

His younger brother Deepu Dube is a businessman and his sister-in-law Anjali Dube is a village pradhan for the last 10 years.

His mother lives with his younger brother in Lucknow who stated that they have no connection with Vikas, even they are in problems due to his behavior and they too wanted that he would be killed by the police. He has 2 Son (Name Not Known).

Vikas Dubey arrested in Ujjain

On 3 July 2020, during an attempt to arrest Dubey and his men, eight policemen were killed, including a Deputy superintendent of police  (DSP), while seven police personnel were left injured. The autopsy report revealed that the DSP was brutally murdered, while other cops had multiple bullet wounds fired from different weapons, suggesting an ambush. The police later recovered weapons, including an Ak -47 rifle and an INSAS rifle, among others.  The IGP of Kanpur said that at least 60 men had ambushed the police team, who were just 30 in number.   Call records showed that Dubey was in contact with multiple cops, who leaked information to him. Following this, the Kanpur administration bulldozed his house with the same bulldozer that had been used by Dubey and his men during the ambush. 25 police teams were then formed to arrest Dubey and his associates. Dubey was finally apprehended on 9 July 2020 at  Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

Infamous criminal, charged in 60 cases including murder, made the startling admission after five days of running from the police, driving from UP to Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh after the Friday massacre in which eight policemen were killed. Jai Bajpai, the treasurer of Vikas Dubey, is also reported to be involved in illegally occupying disputed land and houses. The gangster was arrested more than 600 km from his home in Kanpur, UP, after he was spotted at the famous Mahakal temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Seen in a white striped t-shirt, he bought prayer offerings from a shop before entering the temple. The shopkeeper alerted the security guards, who confronted him when he stepped out.

In the end, Vikas Dubey’s arrest was relatively quick. There was an argument with the security guards and a physical fight, after which he was taken to the police. Footage shows Vikas Dubey slammed in opposition to a police van and cuffed on the head. “Main Vikas Dubey hoon, Kanpur wala! (I am Vikas Dubey of Kanpur),” he yelled out. “Awaaz Nahin (keep quiet)!” – a policeman said, slapping him.
